Joint project of Russian Academy of Science and MMC Norilsk Nickel

On November 10, 2003 President of the Russian Academy of Science, Academician Yuri Osipov, and General Director – Chairman of the Management Board of MMC Norilsk Nickel Mikhail Prokhorov signed General Agreement for cooperation between the Russian Academy of Science and MMC Norilsk Nickel in the field of hydrogen energy and fuel cells. This is the first significant agreement between the Academy of Science and one of the Russian leading industrial companies. At the joint meeting of the RAS Presidium and MMC Norilsk Nickel’ Management Board, held in Moscow on December 9, 2003, the parties have signed Integrated Program of research and development in the area of hydrogen energy and fuel cells.

The main objective of cooperation is development, financing and implementation of top-priority high-tech projects and creation of competitive import-substituting equipment and materials based on hydrogen energy and fuel cell applications. The history of mastering the use of hydrogen as an energy source goes back for a number of decades. The most important periods of this history as well as prospects of the hydrogen energy sector where the Russian Academy of Science and MMC Norilsk Nickel are going to joint their efforts, are described in the sections listed below.
