General approach

MMC Norilsk Nickel manages its personnel in accordance with the Norilsk Nickel Human Resource Management Strategy. The document approved by the Board of Directors in December 2007 defines the role of the Company’s personnel in the implementation of the Production Development Strategy for the period until 2020.

The strategy is based on the approaches to personnel management set out in the Concept of Social and Economic Development of MMC Norilsk Nickel for the period until 2015, approved by the Employee Conference on March 4, 2004.

In Kola MMC, the fundamental document in the field is the HR Management Strategy of Kola MMC for the period of 2008-2013, which was adopted in 2008.

The approved corporate strategies in the field of personnel management have three major objectives ultimately aimed to ensure the Company’s steady development and social stability in its labor collectives:

  • meeting workforce requirements of the operations in terms of personnel number and professional skills;
  • ensuring highly productive work by implementing the most effective personnel motivation systems;
  • providing employees and their family members with additional opportunities to improve their health, engage in physical training and sports, enjoy cultural recreation, and form their corporate pension plans, going beyond the legal requirements.

The Company has uniform corporate standards covering all areas of personnel management, which are set out in the respective internal regulations. The Company among the first Russian companies joined Russian Business Social Charter in 2005.

A package of social programs is formed for each Russian entity of the Group, with its operational objectives, HR strategic goals, and financial status taken into account.

The Company’s social policy won the 6th National competition “Russian Organization of High Social Efficiency” in 2007 for the year 2006. OJSC Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company won the VII National competition “Russian Organization of High Social Efficiency” in 2008 for the year 2007. Based on 2007 performance results CJSC Alykel in 2008 was recognized as the winner in the “Air Transport” sector nomination by the National “Russian Organization of High Social Efficiency” competition.

The Polar Division of Norilsk Nickel received in 2008 1st Grade Certificate of Socially Responsible Business, while its management team was recognized for their outstanding effort in the area of mandatory pension insurance and commitment to employee social protection by decision of a tripartite commission composed of the representatives of Krasnoyarsk regional government, the Federation of Krasnoyarsk Trade Unions and the Krasnoyarsk Regional Division of the Pension Fund of Russia.
