MMC Norilsk Nickel is one of the world's leading mining and smelting companies, and is involved in every aspect of the production cycle, from the prospecting, extraction and production of non-ferrous metals to the marketing of finished products.

Recognising the scale and complexity of the environmental issues that face the company, MMC Norilsk Nickel is intent on the gradual reduction, and, where possible, the prevention of the effect of its production activities on the environment.

The leadership of MMC Norilsk Nickel regards its activities in environmental protection as an intrinsic aspect of its business. The company strives to make its contribution to the steady development of Russia by its observance of the demands of environmental protection legislation, the rational use of natural resources and the ongoing improvement of its environmental activities.

The main directions of the company's environmental policy are as follows:

  • the gradual reduction of the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, with priority going to sulphur dioxide and solid waste;
  • the further reduction of the emission of water borne pollutants into rivers, lakes and sea;
  • the construction of waste disposal facilities with the aim of reducing damage done to the environment.
As part of the company's commitment to fulfilling the demands of its existing environmental policy, MMC Norilsk Nickel observes the principles and demands of international standard ISO 14001:2004.
