The Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company (MMC Norilsk Nickel) has been awarded certificates for the development and implementation of its Integrated System of Quality Control and Environmental Management (ISQCEM) in accordance with international standards ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 in the area of “Management of Production and Projects, Marketing and Delivery of Products (nickel, copper, cobalt, precious metals, sulphur, selenium and tellurium)”.
The system has been accredited by the national accrediting organisations of Great Britain (UKAS) and the Netherlands (Road voor Accreditatie). As has been observed by one of the leading international certification organisations, BVQI (Holding) SA, the certification of the company’s integrated management system is the first ever time that a combined certificate for accordance with two ISO standards at the same time has been awarded.
We should point out that in 2005 work on the implementation of international standards with regard to the management system was carried out both at the company’s main production facilities and at the various enterprises that make up the Norilsk Nickel group.
- At the Polar Division, a quality control system in the area of “the production of nickel, copper and cobalt”, that had been implemented in 2005, was certificated for its compliance to the conditions of ISO 9001:2000, and was subsequently accredited by the national accrediting bodies of Great Britain (UKAS), the Netherlands (RvA), Germany (DAR), and the USA (ANAB). Work is continuing on the implementation of an ecological management system in accordance with the conditions of ISO 14001:2004.
- In June 2005 a compliance audit confirmed that the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company’s existing system of quality control in the area of “the production of nickel, copper, cobalt, their compounds, concentrates of precious metals, nickel matte and sulphuric acid” conformed to the conditions of ISO 9001:2000, with the BVQI certificate being accredited by ANSI – RAB (ANAB), UKAS, and RvA. At the same time, OAO Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company’s system of ecological management and the area of “the mining of ore, the production of nickel matte, nickel, copper, cobalt and its compounds, concentrated of precious metals and sulphuric acid” was registered for its adherence to the conditions of ISO 14001:2004, with the BVQI certificate being accredited by UKAS, RvA and DAR.
- At the OAO Gipronickel Institute, a quality control system “relating to scientific research, projects, engineering, prospecting and environmental conservation, as well as the management of projects in the area of mining, enrichment and other areas of industrial activity” was implemented and certificated in accordance with the conditions of ISO 9001:2000, with the SGS certificate being accredited by Swiss Certification.
- At the company’s Murmansk transport subsidiary, work towards the certification of a system of maritime safety management, in accordance with the international code on the safe operation of vessels and the avoidance of environmental pollution is being completed. This work also takes into account the proposals of the international convention on the preservation of life at sea.
UKAS - United Kingdom Accreditation Service – the British national accreditation body;
ANAB - American National Accreditation board - the USA national accreditation body;
RvA - Dutch Accreditation Council RvA - the Dutch national accreditation body;
DAR - Deutschen Akkreditierungs Rat - the German national accreditation body.
The accreditation bodies above are of equal status to each other, are members of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), and are governmental standardisation and metrological bodies. The Forum’s official web site can be found at www.iaf.nu.
The certificate for adherence to the conditions of ISO 9001:2000 with national accreditation is accepted as valid in the member countries of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and in countries which recognise its standards.
