Metal of platinum group. Represents porous, brilliant angular slices.
Ruthenium is open by Kazan professor Klaus, which in 1844 has found in the rests of the Ural platinum ore a new element which has named ruthenium (from Latin Ruthenia - Russia). Klaus has received ruthenium in the pure state, has studied its chemical properties, has determined atomic weight and has specified similarity between triads ruthenium - rhodium - palladium and osmium - iridium - platinum.
Electronic industry is the main ruthenium consumption sector, the metal is used for the production of coatings for computerhard disks increasing their capacity. Notable for its hardness, infusibility and high electrical conductivity, ruthenium is also used in manufacturing of contactsfor thermostats and relays. In chemical industry ruthenium is used in manufacturing of anodes for chlorine production and as a catalyst. Ruthenium added to alloys increases their hardness and durability. Thermocouples for measuring the highest temperatures are also made of alloys containing ruthenium. Inorganic ruthenium-based dye called redruthenium is used in histological studies to analyze composition of tissues.
